The political system, despite it's conceptions elsewhere, is closer to feudalism then tribalism. Feregite lands are divided into city-state sized "tribes" with a few town-sized fortifications united by prejudice against other tribes. The opressed mix-race peasant class work the fields, whilst the warrior class fight personal battles and all-out wars for personal prestige, land and headmanships. Daran isn't a typical Feregite- even his name isn't. Although his parents were both Feregite, he grew up in the Tebrian town of Carolt- a place whose leadership were making every effort to become more multicultural and "tolerant", but who overstereotyped both Feregites and other races, failed to realise that Daran was essentially psycologically Tebrian, and failed to understand that the Feregites didn't even know what tolerance was. His genetic personality (as opposed to cultural imposistions from Tebrian or Feregite culture) was loud and domineering- it is probably good for him he wasn't raised a Feregite, or he could have become a much worse tyrant even than the typical opressor. As it is, he vies for social status but does it more intelligently and takes the value of reputation into account. Daran, despite a domineering personality, was considerably affected by social pressure and aspired to become a Feregite Warrior to satisfy Tebrian expectations. As the Feregite population grew, many bands and small armies of such warriors were migrating southward to invade other lands- Daran knew he couldn't join them, but from what he knew of the Feregites it wasn't his company that mattered- it was ruling land. He grabbed his chance with both hands...
