Officer's mess, district of savants. Two years ago. Let me try to explain to you, as if you were some metic with no comprehension of honor. Bear with me, Tiex Yu. Everyone's duty lies before them always and forever. There is a price for the freedom we live in, here in Lookshy, and that price is unswerving devotion. This is the same for all that live here, regardless of where they come from. That boy came here for training. He's gifted, I'll grant him that... once his essence is awakened he'll make a great sorcerer-engineer, a real Wai Tan-Junai. The problem is that he's no sense of responsibility for what he's received. I love the Murakani, believe you me, but they've never been fantastic at following orders. This uncle of his knew the deal he made when took in the boy. If we needed either one of them, then they would serve. So we called the man up for service (something about a shortage of blacksmiths to repair armor in the foreign legion, somewhere up in the Haslanti League or some such place), and he goes. Now this boy... right, Nathan... well this boy asks for indefinite leave to return to his family. After the treatment we gave him? He's been allowed the kind of leeway a citizen would never get. He's seen diagrams of our essence cannon batteries, crawled in an out of that god-forsaken orichalcum monstrosity in the basement, and poked about the soul-breaker orb even (don't worry: he doesn't remember any of that part). Genius for the subject, actually repaired some of the essence perimeter mines I gave him last week. But now he thinks he can run back to the plains and spend his days bumping along and making horse-babies? Everyone's duty lies before them, always and forever. To turn away from that path is to turn away from your duty, your honor, your responsibility. Lookshy gave that boy everything he knows; it's high time he starts giving back. ...No, we've taken him off the sensitive material. Now that he's become so morose, he's hardly good for anything. We've got a scavenger scale that needs a Haichei... I think that a little work mucking about in tombs should whip him into shape. 15 years old... he's at that age where he thinks he knows everything and... well I don't have to tell you. We were 15 once. Hell of a long time ago... -Darius Marfame, Air Aspected Dragon Blood and Wai Tan Junai of Lookshy Age: 120 Two dozen terrestrial circle spells, and all lore, occult, and craft charms. Attitude toward Rivers Between Us: patronizing, and disappointed. If he's alive, then he's a traitor to Lookshy and deserving of appropriate punishment. Essence 5 --- 1. Rivers Between Us 2. River's Contacts 3. Heaven's Mandate
