David Thorpe works as a stage magician. He also hires out as an expert consultant on misdirection and 'tricks'to both law enforcement agencies and criminal elements when it suits him to do so (although he has on occasion been playing a double game and misdirecting his clients). This work however (and most of what he does) is for favours and reciprocation rather than for money. He is also a genuine wizard, although he takes pains to conceal this fact (his specialty is illusions, a bit similar to molly).

He operates as a social power broker, mainly through illusion and control of information. His goal is to set up an alternative magical powerbase to the council by creating a web of practitioners linked by mutual deals and obligations (although this group need not be limited to magical practitioners -other supernaturalism could also be linked in). The hope is that he will be able to not only ride the beast but also maintain a degree of control over it.

His motivation is that he dislikes and distrusts hierarchical traditions such as those the council is built on and wants to replace them with what he sees as a more egalitarian alternative.
