The Sterlings have had a ranch up here for generations, raising cattle with thick, shaggy coats. Delorn is the second of four brothers. His older brother, Terrill, takes care of the day-to-day operations of the ranch, while their father runs it.

Delorn didn't see himself staring at cow's asses every day for the rest of his life, so he took any opportunity he could to get away for a bit. Camping by the lake, dropping in on their neighbors, even checking out the monasteries now and then. When there was a need for someone to help shuttle goods around, Delorn jumped at the chance. Terrill and his father see him as a disappointment, but his younger brothers look up to him.
