Tall, dark man in his late twenties with a calm manner, easy smile, and boyish good looks only accentuated by the scar across his left eye (he has many more, just none as prominent). Moderate drinker, terrible poet, reads a lot.

Raines has spent all his adult life serving with various British and British-adjacent militaries all over the Old World, from the Indian Army through the Expeditionary Force to the Cossack hosts, owing to a combination of restless feet, indiscriminate curiosity, and a natural draw to a life of violence - a character flaw, he readily admits, but one he tries his best to use for good. Though an excellent leader, his career has been held back by a certain touch of irreverence, often inconvenient sense of fairness, and reluctance to risk ever advancing beyond active fighting duty; on the other hand, the same qualities make him all the more popular with the troops and keep him where he really wants to be so, ultimately, everybody wins!
