The game draws its inspiration from a mix of old [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celtic_mythology Celtic] and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norse_myth Norse] myth, [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Moorcock Michael Moorcock's] [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elric Elric] novels and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jo_Walton Jo Walton's] [http://www.zorinth.net/bluejo/books/sulien/kpindex.htm Sulien] novels, with some [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warcraft_universe WarCraft] elements thrown into the mix.  Or at least that was the original idea; it seems to have strayed from there.

Scalgard is the Phantom World, a land of war and conflict, where nation strives to overcome nation and, behind the scenes, great elemental lords move men as they can to achieve their own immortal aims.  This is a land where even the greatest hero could be felled by a well-armed and well-drilled band of peasants, but where that same hero may stand tall with the mightiest horrors the world has to off.
