In the beginning he was the only halfling, and he set out in his bumbling way to find out precisely what a halfling was and where he might find another so that he could have children. The story of Elro Mittin's quest is the great legend of the halfling race, and covers his entire adventure from his initial inquiry of a beetle, through his discussions with every animal species, all the way to his encounter with a gold dragon who took such a shine to the funny little creature that he told him the secret of approaching the sun. Elro's quest ended when he went to the Sun to ask about his origins, his nature and how he could procreate... the Sun had no idea. But, taking pity on Elro, the Sun taught him how to divide himself through force of will (the same method by which the sun created the stars). Still puzzled about his origins, but happy to start a family, Elro began to pop out offspring by sheer concentration, and thus was born the halfling race. It is said that Elro walks the planes freely, using the secret taught by the gold dragon to pass through planar boundaries without trying (and often without noticing). Elro's great gift is his likeability, which endeared him to every animal species and the sun to boot during his great adventure. His domains reflect the favor that his clerics can still command from these everpresent allies. How the Sun of Elro's story relates the [[The_Shining_One]] is unknown, but the two churches have turned theological uncertainty into a very concrete and profitable double-tithing program in certain prosperous cities. All for the greater good, of course.
