== Background ==

Yumi’s family has been the caretakers of their shrine since its creation, long before the town was built, or so everyone says. Despite its age the shrine has never been greatly popular, possibly because even now it is a short way out of the town proper and the climb up the hill to reach the base of the steps is steep, to say nothing of the steps themselves. These days the shrine gets very few visitors and only her businessman father’s skillful management of the land and properties the family own in town ensures there is enough money to maintain the full shrine properly, especially as her grandfather prefers not to charge high rents.

Yumi is the middle child of five, with an older brother and sister, 18 year old twins, and a younger brother and sister, 8 year old twins. Yumi is the only one of her siblings to live at the shrine with her grandparents, her mother having moved to join her father in the city where he worked before the younger twins were born and her older siblings having joined them when they turned 14. Her father is an American businessman who married her mother and took the Miyamoto family name. Both her grandparents are still healthy and spend most of their time looking after the shrine or volunteering in town. Although she sometimes feels rejected by the distance from the rest of her family she loves the shrine and her grandparents deeply and has no real desire to leave. Her grandparents have taught her a great deal about Shinto and various traditional arts and she practices kyudo with them regularly.

Yumi performs well at school and has a few friends there, though none particularly close. Her mildly foreign appearance, the relative isolation of her home and the slight remove of her family’s age and status combine to isolate her somewhat from her classmates. She is only infrequently targeted by bullies directly but she often sees the people around her being bullied and dearly wishes she had the courage to stand up and stop them. She has a natural talent for singing and when focusing on doing so exhibits great personal presence. Although she has received a lot of encouragement from her teachers and grandparents to do so she has never been able to get up the courage to perform on stage until recently, when she has finally been persuaded to sign up to sing in an upcoming talent show.

Recently she has begun to dream strange dreams, of noble heroes facing twisted monsters, of passionate flames and a powerful queen and of a voice of heartbreaking beauty singing of sorrow, victory and hope.
