==Background==

Yukiko is the only daughter of wealthy parents, and never lacked for anything in her life. Nothing physical, at least; while her parents love her very much, they demand perfection in both themselves and their daughter. From early childhood Yukiko had the best tutors money could buy, and her parents expected her to live up to their investment; getting perfect grades in school wasn't considered an accomplishment, it was the minimum her parents considered acceptable.

Despite the demands placed on her, Yukiko is not an unhappy child. Her love for learning is eclipsed only by her love for her parents, and their strict methods of parenting have avoided spoiling her as it did many other girls in her social circles (a fact which Yukiko is aware of and profoundly grateful for). Nor has she disappointed her parents; she routinely places near the top of the nation in standardized tests, and never gives any task anything less than her best effort.

Where Yukiko's upbringing has failed her is in dealing with her peers. She never had much time for making friends as a child, and now that she plans her own schedule she's far too frightened to change that. It's not that she lacks opportunity; she's pretty enough, in a geekish way, and lots of girls her age would love to be friends with someone who could practically purchase a new car with her allowance. But other people her age are scary and unpredictable; Yukiko much prefers teachers, or books. Especially books. When other students try to talk to her, she wants nothing more than to shrink away and disappear. Instead, she avoids social situations whenever possible; what free time her schedule allows is mostly spent with computer games or reading (she's a fan of trashy romances, but she would rather die than anyone find that out).

Practically all her tutors and teachers have told Yukiko that with her love of learning and knowledge she would be a natural teacher, but she's aghast at the idea. That means getting up in front of people and speaking, raising her voice and demanding others pay attention to her. Instead, she prefers to volunteer at the local library; it's quiet, and the books don't try to ask her what movies she likes, and she finds fulfillment knowing that she's prepared knowledge for other people to find.

Sometimes, though, she wonders. Sometimes she has dreams about a world illuminated by the light of knowledge, where the voices of the enlightened dispel doubt and superstition. They're such wonderful dreams. It would be nice to be one of those teachers she respects so much.
