=Capsule=

A New World to explore!<br>

The Player Characters, outcasts from the war-torn Old World, will accompany a small colonization fleet to the newly discovered New World. Using either the new colony or a caravel as a base, they will explore, map, plunder, discover...and, if they're lucky, survive.<br>

I'll probably migrate this to Obsidian Portal at some point.<br>

It was an Empire of humans and dwarves, for all that there were a few dragons. After they revolted, and killed their dragon masters, it was their show. And who better? Humans rule the ground, Dwarves rule the underground. Some Elves objected.

==Charn==
Magic. Only lightly ruled by the Empire, Charn was the first bastion of rebellion.<br>
Great value is placed on magic, and magic rules. Consequently, Charn's 'foreign policy' is aggressive, capricious. Magical ability trumps everything, and females are seen as more 'magical'. Perhaps they are, but in any case, they're in charge. Despite that, it's a meritocracy of sorts. Wizards take the established positions, but sorcerers are prized and revered, while being kept out of the way of anything flammable.<br>
But it's not all magic. A respectable career for a non-mage is in the Charn Navy, which rules the seas. Although the captain and officers are often mages.<br>
Deadly foe: Mastier. But you knew that.<br>

Slaves<br>
Anybody in Charn who's not an Elite (i.e. a mage or student or a ship's officer) is probably a fief-slave of one of the Orders or Universities or of an independent Elite. Alternately, he's a pressed crewman in the Navy, which may be worse. There are 'volunteer' or professional sailors, who have a better life, though. This is one of the only main escapes from fief-slavery.

Charn
The Magisterium, all magic-users and officers of ships are members in council and entitled to vote and debate. Often, though, the votes are cast by proxy, signed to the head of Order or University.<br>
Executive enforcement is spotty at best, given the feudal nature of the orders, universities and other magical fiefs. <br>

This system, refined over the course of half a millenium, naturally leads to some overlap in representation for most of the citizens of Mastier and, of the three nations, is the only one to represent a majority of the population. <br>

The PCs will have ownership (legal or otherwise) and access to a caravel, a small sailing vessel with a crew of 20, for their nautical wanderings. Presumably it will be captain'd by whoever takes the Charn Naval Officer background.<br>

Exciting NOTE!<br>
You should make a Primary character and a loyal patsy, a secondary character who is also part of the crew and can serve as a replacement when your Primary character dies.<br>
You'll be able to play as both characters 'strategically' but will have to select which character to use 'tactically', i.e. in individual combats.<br>
Game terms: Maximum PCs in a combat is X, where X is equal to the number of players. This will be strictly enforced, even if it makes no sense, because the DM is too lazy to juggle 10 PCs in one combat.<br>

-Lieutenant Gaius Alonzo Ortiz II, AKA "Ol' Emberbeard"
-A severe, dour dwarf from Mastier.  Born the son of a Senator and later made a scion in his own right, his devotion to Mastier was second only to his devotion to Aa.  His intensity of devotion made others nervous, and did little to improve his standing or his father's in the Senate.  A dutiful and devoted son, he left the senate and took a commission in the Mastier Army with the 1st Longbarrels.  The Longbarrels are Mastier's newest commissioned division - making use of gnomish firearms and invention - in order to match the forces of Charn.  Primarily an ambush unit, the goal of the Longbarrels was to harass the enemy with shots while the Hammerhands or other heavier unit charged in.
-The position was well suited to Ortiz, who picked up the art of gunmanship faster than his peers, and because it was a unit that was typically away from the main force (powder explosions scare even battle-donkeys, and make it hard for fellow soldiers to sleep) it meant that he didn't have to worry about what others thought of him.
-Ortiz served with valor, dedication, and bravery - but due to his reputation as such a strict and severe devotee of Aa, he was never awarded medal or merit. He never complained, but then knew the truth of the matter - that most were just paying lip service to their God, where he truly believed - and that belief unsettled the common.  He knew he would never be truly accepted - he had no calling into the clergy, where such a person might flourish.  That was when he heard the call to adventure - tales of the New World and its bountiful opportunities that lie just out of reach of the more meek and timid of men.  He knew that he had a chance there, in that brave new land, a chance to spread a purer faith of Aa - a chance to build glory for his clan and family - a chance at a new life.
-He resigned his commission with the Longbarrels and set out to find the first ship bound West.
