Oh God... what have I gotten myself into?

The refrain of that thought had haunted Caroline all morning. She'd had some vague notion of going home after the night's adventures and going to sleep, waking to find it had all been a bizarre and vivid nightmare. Instead she'd found herself unable to sleep for the terror and grief pouring through her body. Once she'd exhausted the tears Caroline's weariness still didn't dissipate.

Breed it?

What the hell did that mean? She desperately needed to talk to Evangaline. The utterly frightening man had said that like she was property, a slave, and he had every right to give an order like that. Did he? The memories of the other night, when she became what she was -- a situation that she still wasn't entirely sure she accepted except that it seemed like a given -- were still fuzzy but she did remember that sweet Colonel.

And frankly, being a vampire explained Eric Devereaux's wierdness quite well, thank you very much. Aunt Lizabeth constantly bemoaned her cousin's layabout ways. Ha! If she only knew!

Maggie, her Golden retriever, gave her a nudge, drawing Caroline's attention to the red light flashing on the phone. Someone was calling. She didn't feel like answering. Although... she was supposed to meet Irina DiSanti for brunch. That was still three hours away -- who on Earth would be so rude as to call her at 7:30 in the morning? No matter, they'd leave a message.

Hauling herself out of her chair tiredly Caroline headed for the kitchen to start a pot of coffee brewing. Then she went to take the hottest shower she could stand. She couldn't bear to think about those three dead kids, killed at Gramma Willie's hands. She couldn't bear to think about anything for a while. Instead she pushed it all away and spent the hours working on her book. Her deadline was looming. And in the back of her mind, a thought percolated.

What happens if we don't take care of the rest of the Doc's rabid ghouls? Or worse yet... what happens if we do? Be careful what you wish for, Caroline.... living in interesting times has ever been a curse not a blessing.

---- Return to Natchez By Night
Return to Timeline
Return to Adventure Log
