Fulco Bowyer, the son of a middle ranking Norman mother and a Saxon bowyer from [http://www.conisbroughcastle.org.uk/History/history.htm Conisborough Castle]. There original union caused some scandal, but his mother's position meant that Fulco grew up amongst the well bred. When the Lord's eldest son, Robert, left for the Holy Land, Fulco went with him leaving his childhood friends, the Lord's other sons, behind.
