''Note on Student Skill:'' Gram is obsessed with all kinds of games of skill or chance and learns any new one he comes across, be it Dindavaran peasant drinking games, Uldish card games, Paher dice games or Imperial chess. While he may know nothing of Truil culture, language or customs, he might know all the subtle details of some obscure Truil knife-tossing game.

== Story ==

Gram was a younger son of moderately well-off farmer in the Western Marches of the Empire. Though better off than most, the family weren't particularly wealthy although they claimed to be descended from some forgotten pre-Imperial aristocratic family in the Marches (supposedly the family name reflects this). Not expecting to inherit much, Gram joined the Imperial military and managed to distinguish himself in several engagements. He always felt, however, that he was held back from gaining high rank due to his lack of connections while the do-nothing aristocrats from the Center were awarded commands earned through family connections.

The Maemeck envoy found the exchange delightful, but the Imperial guests did not. Gram was taken by the Crimson Guard and put on death row for treason. But someone intervened. It seemed his actions secretly impressed some members of the Western Marches royal family who despaired of the weakness and corruption of the Imperial court. Gram's death sentence was commuted to permanent exile. The last contact he received from home was a message saying that while he could never return to the Empire upon pain of death, he could send a message to the monarch of the Western Marches for aid if he needed it. The message also warned him that the aristocratic upper echelons of the Imperial military have put a secret bounty on his head for shaming them so publicly in front of the Empire's enemies. Now Gram Margrave finds himself a sword-for-hire in some Uldish colony on the Truil frontier.
