Gladius is a veteran of the Last War, it's just that he managed to lose most of his abilities due to a "freakish off-chance that the girl with Bat wings was a succubus."  Gerald actually knows Gladius quite well and the irony is that he never suspected that his former associate in the war was actually Trent's son (aside from his being a total pain in the ass).

Gladius received the '''Armor of the Dark Underlord''' by pretty much sheer chance and has since inherited his idiotic minions [[Bob and Steve H. Goblin]] whom have pretty much taken it upon themselves to make him into the next Emperor of the World.  Aside from assembling a gang of Kobolds and sacking some halfling's village (who really deserved it), it proved to be a fairly unrewarding experience.  Then Gladius killed Lord Darro and proceeded to find himself transformed into a genuine hero of the Reaches (and a hated enemy of Aundair).

Having decided to join the Watchmen because of the words of Ben, he's been prophecized to be someone instrumental in the coming battle between Good and Evil.  While not a Divine Spark, he's actually imbued with the power of the Devourer and the forces of Chaos as well as Evil.  It's rather bizarre given that he's not actually all that personally malevolent.  Gladius intends to spend the time mostly learning from Gerald on how exactly to be a great leader and conquer the world.
