His father served in Vietnam, and returned home mostly intact, and along with a Japanese-born wife, whom he'd met during an extended station in Japan. His father found work with the Detroit Metropolitan Police Department, and his mother worked as a bookkeeper. Due to his mixed heritage and his father's career, growing up in a middle-class neighborhood was at first somewhat difficult, but eventually he turned what could have been a difficult situation into one where he nurtured and developed strong social skills. In High School, Matt was an above-average but not exceptional student, and had some athletic prowess, which led to a partial scholarship to Michigan State University, and a degree in History. Following college, Matt followed in his father's footsteps and joined the Detroit Metro PD. After several years of distinguished service, he was promoted as one of the youngest detectives in department history (some would say that his father exerted undue influence, but his record and skills were sufficient to the appointment). A couple of years later, his father passed away, and Matt lost faith and direction in his life that his father provided, both professionally and personally. Unlike his brothers, he alone followed in his father’s footsteps into law enforcement. At his mother’s suggestion, he attended law school, where he achieved a new-found passion and zeal, and arranged to work for the District Attorney’s office following his graduation. However, due to the economic collapse, his graduation found him not only out of his new role as an Assistant District Attorney, but also found him unable to return to his former career as a police detective. As a man dispossessed, with his family scattered (his mother moved to be with extended family in Japan, and his siblings now in other parts of the country), he felt as though he were falling back into the darkness in his life. Having pulled himself back from the brink, only now to be cast onto the edge again, he resolves himself to rise above and re-invent himself once again, just as the country is now tearing itself apart.
