I draw slightly more defined distinctions than those presented in the book, as follows: *Retainers. These are specialists to be hired as per page 121 of the DD rulebooks. *Mercenaries. As per page 120. These guys will not go into dungeons but will otherwise fight to protect their employer's interest, provided the money is good and the odds not overwhelming. *Hirelings. As per the chart on page 119 and description on 120. They adventure typically for single missions and for a lump sum payment, not a share of treasures. They are typically employed by the party as a hole, but in cases where employed by a single PC count toward the max number of hirelings as determined by Cha. *Henchman. Employed and loyal to (theoretically) single PCs, henchmen are the most loyal (typically) and the most valuable of the lot. They are typically paid a small salary, equipped by the hiring PC as needed and granted some share of the party treasure (25% of one share is a good round figure). They gain XP as a normal character, except theirs is based off their treasure share. Henchmen count towards the maximum number of hireling as determined by Cha.
