'''Origin:''' Dateline 1939 - Adolf Hitler orders the invasion of Poland and Europe is once again plunged into war. At his private laboratory, on the outskirts of Meteor City, scientist Edgar Edwards continues to work on his design for a device that amplifies human brainwaves. As with many of his other inventions, Edwards plans to make this one freely available to the world once it is completed. However, after his research notes are stolen by Nazi agents, who plan to use the technology to create an army of psychic supermen, he starts to have other ideas. Using a prototype of his device he is able to defeat the fleeing enemy spies by telekinetically picking up their car and then dropping it into a nearby river. A young boy called Jimmy, who witnesses this feat, is heard to exclaim "Wow! That was incredible!" And thus a legend is born.

After the end of the war, the greatly disillusioned Edwards retreats to a secret underground vault where he places himself inside an experimental cryogenic chamber. He plans to sleep for two hundred years, not returning to the world until what he hopes will prove to be a more enlightened time. However, with the disappearance of The Icons, agents of STORM track him to his hiding place and revive him, explaining to him that "Meteor City needs heroes"...
