Having lived on his own his whole youth, Dodger started quite naturally in adult life as a petty thief, before moving on to become an actual pro.
His swiftness, martial arts talents and thievery skills allowed him to earn a living, and saved his neck every time his foul mouth put him in a dire situation.

It is unclear how Dodger came in contact with the occult; what is certain is that the Bureau saw a good opportunity to get a young, thievish recruit onboard.
Dodger might finally have found a home, and people he can count on.
