If you want another elf retainer (or two), I'm fine with it. You can recruit from home. You can also attempt to recruit some sort of fey type creatures rather than actual elves. Your call.

If he wants to, he could return home for the winter to do research, learn new magics, and spend the time recruiting. We can fast-forward to spring as fast as you guys want.

He inspects the land that he's interested in settling, find that the area between the rivers is probably a little swampy and almost certainly inhabited by lizardfolk, but farther inland amongst the hills the ground is higher and there's a natural cut or two that would be worth further exploration. In the spring, he'll do some recon on it, or send someone else.
