Spectre [Real Name: John Brigance] was a Navy SEAL during Vietnam. Before a particularly hazardous mission, he signed a document donating his body to the US government for experimental purposes in the case of death or "debilitating permanent injury". The mission went fubar, and John ended up a POW. When he was rescued, he was found near death, ravaged by infection. The defense department quickly stabalized him as best as possible and flew him back to the US for a new program.

Over the course of a number of years, John and a number of other elite US soldiers were used as guinea pigs for a number of experiments, as well as given advanced training. After 10 years, the program was shut down. All the subjects but John had died. The government wasn't sure what to do with him. For some reason, many of the experiments had taken hold. They had their supersoldier. But there were side effects. John's brain was struggling to keep up. He suffered from amnesia, fits of rage, nightmares and flashbacks, and most of all was subject to periods of agonizing pain. During the middle of a demonstration to the Joint Chiefs on the viability of the program, John suffered an episode that caused him to double over in pain in the middle of a live-fire exercise. The Joint Chiefs had seen enough.

The Cold War was still on, however, and they government couldn't let their project get out in the open. John was held prisoner, with no knowledge of who he was or why he was being held. His only friend was the former director of the program, Col. Jake McMurray. The Colonel's career had died with the program, and it was his job to babysit John until the government decided what to do with him. He continued John's training program, however, mostly to give them both something to do rather than out of any real need.

In 1996, President Clinton got wind of John's captivity, and ordered him released. He was released into the world, his only posessions were the clothes on his back, a few hundred dollars, and a parting gift from Col. McMurray: A katana designed during another phase of the program.

John wandered to NYC, where Col. McMurray told him he was from. He found an apartment in a rough neighborhood, where crime was rampant. It all started when he stopped an attempted rape, and turned into a local hero. Then there was a mugging, and then a burglary, and soon enough he was the neighborhood's savior. It was soon after that he came to the attention of a group of Supers who realized his potential.

John is 68 years old, but appears in his late 20s, and John himself is often confused his age as he has no memory prior to the mid 80s.

His still suffers from chronic pain, and is dependant on strong painkillers to keep it in check. Despite his captivity, he is fiercely loyal to the United States and its people.
