Who were you in the Last Redoubt, and who, if anyone, knows you’re being ridden by a past alternate ancestor? (A big factor in that book is reincarnation, and I wanted it to be important - it might not be how they think, but they're used to memories of a previous time and if aware, probably helped clarify some things.)

A student of the occult and probably the faculty and fellow students.

What is something good about the Redoubt that makes it worth fighting for? What is something that is bad but could be reformed? (Like I said, I want it to be a genuinely good and worthwhile place, but I don't cast aspersions. You do you, and also generate some plot hooks for things other than combat or good and evil.)

None of the residents are allowed to live in abject poverty, there is always some reasonable minimum standard of living. No one goes hungry or is homeless or lacks medical care. There is a sort of spirit of all for one, one for all. Sadly, this leads to a mild xenophobia to outsiders.

Have you met any survivors with humanity out in the Night Lands? Are they “human survivors”, and if not, why not? (As part of the "twisted, idealistic Lovecraft" of Masks, I also wanted to show the Night Lands are alien and hostile to humans, not evil; there is something beautiful in them, if in the same melancholic sense of a ruin reclaimed by nature. And since you are proof what isn't human is not inherently hostile to humans, there might be something out there that isn't part of the Last Redoubt but is a sign of humanity, the quality, living beyond the species.)

He spent most of his time either in class or at home and never really gave the Night Lands much thought but the surviving geothermic powered plants thriving and adapting he views as a symbol of hope.

What is awful enough about the Tsan-Chan to make you realize that the Last Redoubt deserves to win their cold war? (Reverse of the first question; there's a reason you haven't decided to shack up with the Wasps, even if they might be less attached to the light bioconservatism of the Redoubt than you are.)

Mercy is not mere sentiment and cruelty is not a virtue! The Wasps philosophy offends him deeply.

When and how did you encounter your new patron Old One, and how did they send you back? Is there something alien about the transformed world of the Night Lands you actually enjoy? (Pretty much the "what was your Visitation" question, but also asking for worldbuilding prompts about random weird crap that is just an element of the new world.)/quote]

Yog-sothoth is the key and the gate and has power to move people along their reincarnations, so it did it for him. My student was mediating near the Current and had a flash of inspiration that threw him into the presence of the all-in-one.

Have you met the Brethren of Silence? What made you fear the House of Silence without seeing it directly? (The other antagonists! And the "bigger fish" of the Band as they are now when it comes to Ye Olde Cosmic Crap. There are things about the Night Lands that are beautiful in their fearsomeness. The House is a thing to be not only feared, but hated.)

No, just rumors of their awfulness and the screams of the tormented during his visitation and return.

How did you figure out others had the same disjunct you did, and how did you figure out there are people who want to be the Tsan-Chan, including probably darkening the sun? (And not, the present-day worldbuilding - how did you meet your Band, and how did you become aware of the hostile proto-Tsan-Chan you're investigating?)

[/spoiler]

Upon reawakening in the present sunlight lands, he went about trying to understand what happened and looked carefully online and so forth to find people with similar experiences. He met a lot of weird and interesting people before discovering those like himself.
