Lying requires the ability to keep track of truth and falsehood simultaneously without forgetting the details. Valentine is habitually cool under pressure but he is also fully aware that he's not a terribly great liar. He stops along the way to buy her groceries. No liquor or cigarettes. If she wants those, she can pay for them herself. He mounts the stairs to her door, still trying to decide if it would be better to take her with him when he leaves Paquin or if it would be safer to leave her behind. Either scenario has its pros and cons. If she were aboard the ship with him, he wouldn't have to worry about the criminal elements killing her while he was away. Then again, if she were aboard the ship with him, he'd have to worry about her getting caught in the crossfire if the job goes south. She would be equally safe, regardless. All risks being equal, Valentine chooses to side with maintaining his inner peace. His mother is not the most delightful of company. The possibility of being cooped up in a tin can enduring her cutting remarks and tantrums is enough to decide the matter.
