'''Background:'''  Phoenix comes from a poverty-stricken family, but the Smiths didn't let that get in the way of what little happiness could be eked out in the world.  He lived in relative peace, the middle of three siblings.  This was not to last, however.  A freak Prima accident changed his life forever.  The explosion claimed the life of both his parents, and left Phoenix and his younger sister bedridden as the strange forces coursed through their systems.  Suddenly the head of the house, Jasen found work at Shori to pay for the treatments to help his only remaining family.  At first he sent regular updates, but after awhile his correspondence dried up; his younger siblings were too ill to respond.

One month ago Phoenix woke up, the only sign of his earlier mishaps a faint spider web of glowing veins across his body.  Otherwise, he was in perfect health, and found that he had developed the ability to channel energy blasts.  However, he learned that his recovery was miraculous, and that his sister Aria was unlikely to recover.  And then he learned of the Evo crusade.  Figuring he could gain enough power to save Aria, he set off to become a crusader.
