Yes I know you are only seventeen years old and you can cast about half a dozen pretty low level spells. Yes I know your master never told you about any of this, it's probably because he thought he had more time before he kicked the bucket. Unfortunately, no. So listen up. The power of the Expanse is incredible and wonderful, and it can do a lot of good. Unfortunately, it can do a lot of really bad things as well. Really, really bad things. I'm talking about world destroying, humanity exterminating bad. And it's your job to make sure that the things out there don't get to come and ruin things for everyone over here, and vice versa. Think of yourself as like a cop, except you are alone, and most denizens of the Expanse, even if they don't want to kill everyone ever, dislike you on arrogant principle. Fortunately, you have some of the heaviest artillery around, backing you up. You see, before human beings had built civilizations, they were aware of the Expanse. And thousands of years ago, there was a wise woman who realized that it was both a really good and a really bad thing. Fortunately, she (and all of her successors, including you, why do you think you were picked for the job) was an incredibly talented mage, able to create and codify a lot of spells, and she decided that she would watch over the border and keeps things running smoothly. Inevitably, she died, but by that time she had nominated her worthy successor, a sacred apprentice who would continue her role. And then he did the same, except he had the spirit of a really powerful sorceress backing him up. You remember that you can cast spells by making deals? Like that, except on a permanent basis. He knew everything she did, and so did his apprentice and his apprentice and so on all down through the ages until you. So yeah, that headache you have? That's the result of thousands of years of accumulated magical power and knowledge dumped into your brain. Congratulations, you can now wipe most gods off your boots. Don't get to cocky thought, since the ones you can't will inevitably be the ones that try to mess with you. Of course, you can always make a less permanent deal with them for a one-time spell in return for a favor. Be careful though, deal with the devil and all that (don't pick the devil, please). And there's me, your helpful spirit guide and ephemeral secretary. I've been helping out the Magus Eternals for a long time, you're not totally alone. Just mostly. So Jason. You are now probably the most powerful mage on the surface of the Earth, and in the top leagues in the Expanse as well. You have the entirety of the Earth to watch over in case of horrific attacks coming from the realms of pure magic, a number of enemies that will try to kill you because they hold a grudge against your predecessor from the time of Nero or whoever, and homework due in on Tuesday. Your life will from no on be filled with moments of transcendental wonder and supreme horror. You will likely die a heroes death to save reality. Happy Birthday!
