=== Background ===
An aggressive, intelligent youth from a cold, desert world, Marava's parents travelled frequently over the border in Imperial service.

In childhood, she met Wu's family, and made a favorable impression, despite (or perhaps because of) her young age. She and Wu have remained in touch over the many intervening years.

She barely passed the course of the Imperial Naval Engineering College. Subsequent psychiatric evaluation determined that what seemed then to be suicidal recklessness was in fact highly perceptive bravery which ''seems'' to the untrained eye to be suicidal recklessness. She'd already earned the nickname "Mad Mary" before graduation, but she also graduated, already having earned hands-on pirate hunting experience on cadet cruises. (One of these was a particularly hellish bit of action, where she went into battle for the first time with her old friend Wu.) She was among the top ten marksmen in her graduating class ''despite'' the Engineering program at that school offering no actual combat courses.

Ensign Anders lobbied intensely for a transfer to the Engineering department, which she received, being promoted to Sublieutenant in charge of a damage control team in her first year of actual service! Despite excellent discipline in the field, her skills continued to be eclectic—she focused upon fencing as much as systems maintenance. She met Henryk during a high-classification data analysis training program.

But piracy patrol and eccentric skill training paid off; she made full Lieutenant before she was 26… though she still could not make Command, due to "lack of experience" (and lingering skepticism on the part of the Admiralty about her sanity).

Unfortunately, a few months after her 29th birthday, she become involved in the events immortalized in the movie "A Caste Adrift"—where, among other things, she met Jan, and lost her eye and other important parts. It wasn't Jan's fault.

The Navy paid for the replacement parts, but Mary was a little self-conscious about the scarring about the new eye. Or perhaps she was simply embracing the nickname. In any case, she now sports an eye patch, usually color-coordinated to her formal dress cloak.

At the age of 30, she is now honorably discharged from Naval service, and seeking new and more interesting adventures with the strange friends she has made on her voyages.
