== Background ==

The dwarf archaeologist Mareem was shocked to discover an android in such good condition, buried under piles of junk. With a bit of work, she was able to get the being repaired and back on his feet. He had no memories of what he had done before she found him, so she named him Matyiu and adopted him as her son.

Matyiu loved learning about the glimpses of history that old technology could provide, and he soon developed a knack for putting things back together and getting old machines working again. The council that employed Mareem took notice of this, and made their move: they claimed Matyiu was not legally a person, and therefore was property of the council.

Not wanting to say goodbye to her son, but knowing that he couldn’t stay with her with the council breathing down her neck, Mareem tearfully bade Matyiu set off into the wastelands: ostensibly his mission is to recover old technology and repair it, and he’ll come home in time. But they both knew when they said their farewells that he’d never be allowed to return home while the council was out for his head.
