She went to corporate school in a corporate bus and competed with the other corporate kids for having her corporate parents buy her corporate stuff. Then, for a reason Nikki couldn't then understand, it was all ripped away from her. The family was bankrupt as a result of her dad's incompetence, as her mother never tired of reminding him in their frequent, loud fights. They had to move out of their safe corporate neighborhood and into the Combat Zone. As the oldest of four kids in the family, Nikki was the one who was targeted by the local toughs for punishment for being different. She took more beatings than she could count, but she held out and was eventually tougher than everyone. Nikki learnt to look after herself first and foremost, something her oldest sister never really forgave her for, and developed a fierce contempt for the thugs around her in the Zone. She knew she was better than them. Their internecine warfare made them little better than animals, if that's what they chose to do. But she had avoided getting involved with the gangs, and she knew there were others who avoided it too, and she promised herself that she would help them. She joined the police force as soon as she could, immediately after high school, building on her knowledge of the Combat Zone and its denizens to specialise in tracking down suspects. Nor is she above planting evidence to convict the guilty, as she did one leader of a small female gang. To Nikki, the ends justify the means. She is a very angry, resentful woman, who, unbeknownst even to herself, is desperately looking for some stability. Her prized possession is a recording of a former co-worker of her dad's, giving testimony that her dad was the fall-guy for someone else's illicit activity in the company. The co-worker died in an 'accident' a few days later, and so the recording alone is inadmissable without his corroboration.
