They did not restrict the sale of their products to fellow wizards, they also had customers among the upper crust of the Muggle population of Venice. Aristocrats, courtesans and other people of means. And it was not just cosmetics they offered. Poisons and genuine magic potions whose sale was forbidden were also on offer. Eventually the reputation of Di Mercurios as poisoners and lawbreakers got so notorious, and their number of enemies grew to a level where Venice was no longer safe, and the entire family emigrated to the New World. Settling in the area that would grow into the city of Chicago, they started their business again. But having learned a lesson, Di Mercurios resolved to be more careful. No more poisons. They would move away from dangerous products. This did not mean that Di Mercurios moved to strictly legitimate products. Always the opportunists, the prohibition era was when they rose to wealth on alcohol sales. And they did not hesitate to use their magic to aid their endeavors. But they were careful not to use aggressive magics. Defensive ones worked just fine. Repello Muggletum kept both the police and their mundane rivals from their breweries and warehouses. Di Mercurios ran some of their own speakeasies and also supplied several groups of organized crime in Chicago, including Al Capone’s Chicago Outfit. The prohibition is in the past, and today Di Mercurios run their brewery openly. Mercury Ale is a popular local product, and its more blatantly alchemically enhanced version, Enchanted Mercury, that is (mostly) sold just among the wizardly community, is also very well known. But the reputation of Di Mercurios as opportunists and gangsters remains – and not undeservedly so. They continue to dabble in black market products and services, although they are far more subtle about it than in their poisonous past. Di Mercurios favor subtlety both in their interactions and in the magics they use. Years ago, as young Callisto was starting his first year in the Wildwood Academy. Donna Annabella, Callisto’s mother and the head of the family, straightened her son’s necktie and said: “Study well, but do not stress too much about grades. High grades are something to be sought after in an employee. Managers are better off with a wider set of knowledge. It is enough to know who to hire and who to delegate to. As a future manager, your time is better spent in making connections. The Academy is a good place to form relationships that will benefit you in the future.” “Yes, mom,” Callisto said dutifully. “There are four classes of people,” Annabella continued. “Useful, interesting, threatening, and all the rest. Get to know the first three, making friends with the first two and learning the weaknesses of the third. You can ignore the rest, but do not be too blatant about it. You can never have too many friends, but do not make more enemies than you can afford.” “Yes, mom,” Callisto repeated. “And remember to keep an eye out for a suitable bride. Only another mage is good enough, and the Academy is the best place to find one who is sufficiently talented.” “Mom!” Callisto said in a young boy’s voice that implied he’d rather turn himself into a newt than go on a date, much less marry someone. Today, as a fifth year student, Callisto is a young, dark haired Italian-American man. He dresses well, but not ostentatiously, always seeking to fit in. Callisto has been raised to lead, but he does not boss people around. Typically of Di Mercurios, he is subtle. He is also outgoing and always out to make friends. And it is not difficult at all to talk him into breaking the rules a bit. [[PotterPRIME:_Well_of_Nimue#Character_Files.2FMeta_Currencies | < < < Return to Main Page]]
