Primlacross is played with four teams, 13 players on each team. One acts as goalkeeper, three as Guardians, and nine as runners. Goalkeepers fly on brooms and guard a three foot hoop levitating over the end of their quarter of the circular field. Guardians also fly on brooms and are responsible for intercepting the elemental balls and returning them to their runner teammates. Guardians are not permitted to attempt goals. If they make a goal the point goes to the other team whose ball it is as if that team had made the shot.

Runners move the balls downfield by running and passing. Runners (and technically keepers) are the only players allowed to shoot the balls.

Each team has an elemental ball representative of their hearth. Stone for Bear, Cloud for Wolf, Bone for Hart, and Fire for Bee. One ball is in play at a time. Teams cannot score points shooting at their own goal. Teams receive one point for shooting another team's ball through another team's hoop or five points for shooting it through that team's hoop. Shooting your own ball through any of the other team's hoops is worth ten points.

The circular field is roughly fifty yards in diameter.
