You can be my squire!” said the other, Cory. “Are you playing?” A red haired dwarf girl, apparently their younger sister, peeked from around the corner of the smithy. “No. We are training!” Corwin said. “One day we will avenge our ancestor and reclaim our ancestral lands outside the valley!” “And I’ll be by your side!” the girl announced. “Can I play too?” The boys laughed. “Don’t be silly," Cory said. "Weapons are not for girls. Go play with your dolls.” “But I want to play with you!” “Well, we don’t want to play with you!” The boys went back to hitting each other. The girl pouted and walked further from the small settlement, grumbling. “I don’t even like dolls! My brothers are poopyheads!” Approaching the pile of rubble sealing the caves leading out of the valley, she heard noises from behind the rubble. Almost like the sounds her brothers made when playing, but different. Quieter. Peeking out, she saw two girls, a bit older than her. It was the elven sisters who lived in the village. They were holding small, blunt sticks and apparently trying to stab each other with them. But unlike her brothers, who just bashed each other, the girls moved acrobatically, flipping and ducking to evade the stabs. “Are you fighting or dancing?” the dwarf girl asked. The elven girls stopped and turned to look. “Oh hi, Corinna. What we are doing is a bit of both. It is an elven martial art focusing on agility and evasion. Our father taught it to us.” “I wish my father taught me, but he thinks that fighting is for boys,” Corinna sighed. “He won’t teach me smithing either. If I try to learn from him with my brothers, he hustles me into the kitchen and tells me to learn from mom.” “That sounds silly,” one of the elven sisters said. “I think so too. And my brothers are just as silly. They won’t let me play with them.” Suddenly Corinna’s face brightened. “Can I play with you? Show me your marshal art!” “It’s martial art!” one of the girls laughed. Then they looked at each other, and then back at Corinna. “Okay. Come over here, we will start with the stances.” Some years later “What is this I found by your bedside?” Korbin, Corinna’s father asked sternly as she walked in, bow slung across her back and a freshly shot scrawny hare held in her hand. If Korbin expected Corinna to react with submission to his stern demeanor, he was disappointed. She looked at her father with a nonchalant expression. “What does it look like? It is a stone amulet with a carved symbol of a tankard.” “That is a symbol of Cayden Cailean!” Corinna’s father said. “In this family, we pray to Iomedae, just like our revered ancestor!” “Are you sure ancestor Koran prayed to Iomedae? He was an innkeeper, and Cayden Cailean is the patron of innkeepers.” Taken aback, Korbin the blacksmith attempted to recover his verbal momentum. “Insolence! Talking back to your father like that! You have spent too much time with those flighty long ears! Learning bad habits, losing your way. I should have put a stop to that long ago, but I was lenient because there weren’t that many playmates for you. But enough is enough! From now on, I forbid you to see them!” “I don’t care,” Corinna said. “What are you going to do if I do, throw me out? And eat turnips from that point on?” She dangled the hare in front of her father’s eyes. “Have you noticed that it is me who brings meat to the table? You and my brothers know how to hammer iron, and each other. But that is all you know. I have learned to survive, and to hunt. From the flighty elves. So if you dislike that so much, are you going to skip dinner?” Korbin fumed, but found himself at a loss of words. “Thought so,” Corinna said. “Now excuse me, I need to skin the hare.” Corinna walked to the small kitchen, put her bow away and the hare on the table. Her father did not follow her. But as she was washing her hands before starting to work on her catch, her brothers walked in. “You hurt father, talking to him like that!” Cory said. “After all he has done for us!” “And father is too gentle to hurt you back,” Corwin said, and then stepped menacingly close to her. “But we are not!” “This has been a long time coming!” Corinna said and turned to face her brother while extending her thumb so it was rigid like a knife. Corwin pulled his fist back – and Corinna stabbed her thumb into his armpit! As Corwin doubled over wailing and holding his armpit, Cory came in swinging. Corinna ducked under the swing, grabbed her brother by the back of his knees and pulled, dropping Cory on his butt. Hard. She followed up by planting her fist in his gut, on the soft spot just below the ribs. Corwin was starting to recover, but Corinna pivoted and kicked his legs out from under him, sending Corwin on the floor as well. “Now that we have done the warm up, care to get up?” Corinna asked with hands on her hips as her brothers groaned on the floor. As neither one made a move to continue the fight, she commented; “Thought so.” Turning to the hare she had caught, she stated: “I don’t want to have this conversation again, got it?”
