However, he would hve remained a demon at heart - allbeit a relatively polite one - if it was not for the child Lucia. Lucia's parents were struck down by a plague that swooped the town. Varek found her, wandering the forests without home nor familly. She was to young to recognise him, and saw only a stranger with odd coloured eyes and hair. Where once he would have seen an easy meal - children had once been his faveourite to devour - he saw a lost girl. He took her in, and raised her. He discovered that the plague was the work of a witch who lived in the nearby hills. Varek went to her hovel, and made sure the crows fed well.

In time Lucia learnt who Varek was and what he had been but she did not care. He was kind and looked after her. And Varek learnt to love, to see the beauty in the world. Lucia grew up to be a fine, stong and charming young woman. She was an excellent swordswoman and a compasionate one at that. She never slew anyone, and when she had to kill monsters or wild animals she allways felt sorry for them and dug them a grave. And she made Varek better. He no longer fed on the villagers, but continued to protect them, until one fateful night.

Under a starless, moonless night a demon by the name of Persarone came to the village. A wicked and vile woman, she had an alien bueaty about her. She walked through the town and brought night terrors to it's inhabitants. But she had worse things planned. She could smell the other demon - and demonic law is very clear. When two demons meat in this world, they must fight for the souls they currently possess and anything else they may have - contracts, pacts and deals. For all deals with demons are magical, and they are bound to them just as the other party is. But Perarone is one of the wittiest demons in existance, and one of the cruelist. She killed thirteen men, women and children. She used their blood to draw a magic circle in the dirt and placed each body at key points on the archaic demonic design - her mark before retreating to the dark reecesses where this world bodders with it's neighbours. Varek felt the presence of the demon, and was there soon. Appaled at the slaughter and the use of the archaic mark he called out the murderers name but it was to no avail. She had gone to exact the next part of her plan.

When Varek returned to where he and Lucia lived he was greated by the demon. And at her feet, Lucia. Bleeding out and breathing ragged breaths. Pain, written across her face. Varek could feel the dark magic of the demon, filling the poor girl with pain. He lunged at her but fund he could not get close. A circle of blood blocked him. Persarone is famed for her knowledge of these arcane tools and this one prevented him from getting to her. She laughed at him, a cold heartless laugh. There was nothing he could do. But his friend was not as weak as she may have seemed. He sword lay just within her reach, and she grabbed it, slicing through the demon. But demons do not die easily. As he form flew away in whisps of smoke blown away by the wind, Varek knew she was not dead. With the demon gone, the circle lost it's potency and he ran to the side of the dying Lucia. But there was nothing he could do. The last of her life bled out of her as a horrible truth sunk in. Persarone had claimed her soul. She would not move on to the next life, there would be no peace.
