Richard is from a wealthy and well-respected family, born and raised in West London. He has had the finest medical training in England, and earned some measure of renown for his abilities. However, the threat of scandal caused him to quietly leave his beloved London and take up residence abroad, where he sells his services to the squishier members of the wealthy classes. He maintains estates in England for income, and has an investment in a British tea clipper, though given his precarious status back home, he is careful about tapping those incomes. He is not much of a fighting man, though he has developed some sense of adventure on his travels, coming to enjoy the freedom of his new life, despite its sometimes perilous nature.
