Strangely, the long comatose period did not atrophy his muscles, and he could speak and think as if he had just waken up from a night of sleep. Nobody new how to call him so the Planetary New Orleans staff just called him John. Later, he adopted it as his name and Gaia as surname.

Masked vigilante active in Chicago during the 1930's and 40's. His true identity was that of millionaire playboy Lawrence Carter. Several accounts indicate Carter possessed such posthuman abilities as inhuman shooting skill, hypnotic power and invisibility, among others. The Whisperer employed a Chinese man, Yongjie, as his personal driver. This man would later on assume the identity of the [[Planetary_Elseworld_Guide:_People#Mist| Mist]]. Though fighting all crime bosses, Carter had a bitter enmity towards [[#Lo Pan| Lo Pan]], an Asian crimelord. The Whisperer's last appeared on December 1st, 1949, one day after his final confrontation with his Asian nemesis.
