* ''On [[Doctor Bermuda]]'': "I first met the Doctor on departing America in pursuit of my erstwhile nemesis.  I later discovered that he had managed to escape using an exact replica of the C.S.S. Hunley, built in secret by his Confederate allies.  My commissioned steamship traced and retraced the waters where he had last been seen, but found nothing save a small boat of abnormal manufacture.  It was constructed from a curious dark wood, the like of which I have never seen before, but it had neither oars nor masts for propulsion.  eight feet long from stem to stern, its sole occupant was a large shaggy ape.  The fearsome creature was lying insensibly in tiny boat in an iridescent robe with a staff in one hand and a tall, conical hat on his head.<br> &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;"Moved partly by pity, partly by curiousity, we took the poor creature onto our ship and discovered that it was still alive, though apparently suffering from malnutrition and dehydration.  I nursed him back to health in Raleigh while testing his prodigious strength and dexterity, but was surprised when, almost incidentally, he proved to be a most receptive student of humanity.  Within a month he was forming simple phrases, and in a year he was able to write fluently. I took him with me back to England and, after a month of making haphazard attempts at his education, introducing him to the litterati of the city, I was able to leave him quite on his own to continue his studies at his own discretion (thanks in part to generous grants by certain private individuals on his behalf).<br> &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;"His facility for learning is made no less remarkable by the fact that he was, apparently, a complete Tubula Rasa when he was first discovered in the Bermuda triangle.  He did not know his name, and easily took to being called Bermuda by myself and my colleagues.  In fact, since practically everyone I introduced him to was a "Doctor" of some sort, he took to referring to himself as "Doctor Bermuda".  I never bothered to correct him, and the point is moot at present since he holds terminal degrees in engineering and the physical sciences from several universities in England and abroad.<br> &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;"Even today I still consider him to be the only person in England worth seriously discussing the state of the human race.  Of course, I am somewhat prejudiced in this regard since he has had the decency of providing my means of locomotion for the past fifty years."

* ''On [[The Marut Cult]]'': "In the course of my various investigations I have been force (at time, seldom but significant) to make certain compromises and assumptions.  For instance, when asked by the Lazarus trust to retrieve the Naga crown, I did so not from any sort of archeological fervor, but in the spirit of compromise.  The funding from the Lazarus trust is invaluable for my research, and thus I must occasionally satisfy their whims.  Likewise, I assume that the Naga crown is a valuable piece of history that needs to be preserved for the study of all mankind.  The Marut cult would seem to believe otherwise. <br> &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;"Based in the region surrounding the Jog Falls in India, little is known about this mysterious sect of the Hindu religion beyond their fanatical devotion to the Naga Crown, which each and every member is sworn to protect with his life.  They were quite willing to slay us to protect their possession, or in fact to slay one another.  It was only by good fortune and a bit of dramatics that we were able to escape at all.  Even so, I find myself now wondering as we speed to our next destination (Vienna and its environs) why the Marut were so fanatically protective.  Was it merely a sacred artifact they were charged to keep in some forgotten antiquity? Is there more to the Naga Crown than was apparent in our cursory investigations?  If so, I'm certain the Lazarus trust will inform us of any unusual properties. <br> &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;"The Marut typically shave their heads clean of all hair, wear cloaks and cowls, and apparently carry no weapons aside from their bows, which they use to some effect.  I do wish that I could have a reasonable conversation with them some day, if only to discover whether they actually were madmen protecting their fetish, or something more." <br><br>
* ''On [[Ruthven Vaneko]]'': "I hesitate to mention him here, as I have no real knowledge of whether he be friend or foe, but I must add Ruthven as, at the very least, he has been associating with Dipple for too long to be entirely free of suspicion.  I first Vaneko at the now infamous party at Doctor Dipple's residence.  He was worried at the time about finding a cure to some obscure venom; he suggested that Dipple himself would have reason to assassinate him soon.  Besides this morbid revelation, he mentioned that he was a sulfur miner and boyar of some sort in Romania.  I resolved to visit him when he was found to be mentioned in that curious passage in Dipple's diary that I have to taken to referring to as the 'Role Call of the Immortals'.<br> &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;"Now that I am visiting in his castle, I find that he has devoted himself body and soul in devotion to his departed parents.  His chateau, perpetually shrouded in mists, is filled with the booming sound of his dead father's clock, always tolling midnight.  When we first discovered him he was overseeing the digging of his own grave.  More bizarre still, he does not appear to be entirely human; his hands leave no fog on cold windowpanes, for example.  I'm not one to be overly perturbed by such trifles, especially since I myself rarely rise above room temperature unless smoking (or in amenable company), but I did find this strange.  Exactly what sort of experiments did he perform with Dipple while trying to raise his parents from the grave?"

* ''On [[The Lazarus Trust]]'': "How much do I really know about this society?  I do not know what to classify it as.  It claims to be a fellowship of explorers and scientists pushing the boundaries of knowledge, yet I have encountered a few mysteries around its inception and leadership.  I state them here as I discover them.<br> &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;"1. The Lazarus Trust's journals date back to the winter of 1831 in their archives, yet in 1821 I distinctly remember seeing one of their publications in Cairo.  When was the trust founded? <br> &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;"2. Dr. Dipple referred to our contact in Vienna, [[Wendell Harper]],  as both and immortal (or nearly so) and a Lazarine.  Are these one and the same thing?  Who are the Lazarines, and am I one of them or merely a pawn of this hidden circle? <br> &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;"3. Who is the Quiet Man, the elusive head of the Lazarus Trust?  Why has no one met him?"<br> &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; <br>

* ''On [[The Creature]]'': "The creature seemed to be built out of mushrooms. It was pasty white and flaky, having a strong odor of almost mold upon it's surface. I stood toe to toe with the creature and was almost knocked out. The inhuman strength that it possessed was unyielding and powerful. I would hate to cross paths with it again, as I do not know if I would survive the next time. <br> &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;"Professor Dipple must have been a crazy lunatic to have devised up this monstrosity to Human and Animal kind.
