About twenty years ago, a young Esrolian fisherman (well, woman) was swept into a little travelled part of the sea by a storm. She encountered a local sea-god, Nereus, who had a roving eye where women were concerned. Using his godly charms, he had little difficulty in securing his desired outcome and, having filled her nets with a tremendous catch, saw her safely home. 9 months later a daughter was born, whom the woman named Psamanathe (Sam for short); the woman kept silent about the father's identity, not wishing her daughter to be subject to fear and superstition, though she did tell the girl herself as soon as she was old enough to keep this secret.

About twenty years ago, Nereus, the minor sea god in Mirrorsea bay, fell in love (well, lust) with the beautiful daughter of a fisherman (Nereus is well known to have a roving eye) and he fathered a daughter upon her (Nereus is well known to have fathered many children with mortals), a daughter the fisherman's daughter named Psamanthe. She also refused to marry anybody after this, for Nereus is also well to be a lover beyond compare of any mortal man and, after the death of her father, she ended up struggling to raise her daughter alone. Psamanthe loved her mother and, despite the fact that she felt the call of the sea, she stayed by her side. That ended when a pestilence passed through the area, killing her mother (who was worn out by hard work). After that, at the age of nine, Psamanthe ran away to sea, cutting her hair short and wearing the clothes of a boy. From then on until recently she lived as a sailor, never suspected of being a woman, especially when she grew to be seven feet tall and far stronger than most men. Very recently, after an injury caused by pirates trying to board her ship, the ship's surgeon (and the rest of the crew) discovered her true heritage and she was forced ashore.
