The child of a legionary and a camp follower, Quintus was born in a ''castrum''. As a boy, he made himself useful ferrying messages back and forth, and became a sort of camp mascot, officially joining the legion in his late teens, and being initiated into the Mysteries of Mithras shortly thereafter. His legion backed the wrong pretender in a recent power struggle, and was wiped out almost to a man in the ensuing battle. Fleeing into the wastes, his military career effectively over, Quintus decided to dedicate himself to the service of Mithras (the only source of stability left) and attain ever-greater knowledge of his mysteries. But meanwhile, a man must slake his thirst, feed his belly, and make his way in the world, and that takes coin...

Quintus is of medium height, broad-shouldered, and muscular-- thickset if not slightly plump, with looks that would be considered striking rather than handsome. His black hair is cropped close and he has begun to grow a short beard. He wears a Phrygian cap on his head and robes-- all of coarse black wool-- over his chainmail shirt and breeches as a sign of his office and rank.
