The Florin dynasty once was greater than it is. At its height, no Imperial institution was unconnected to their majesty, and the head of the House could command fealty from anyone - for the right price. As part of its private army, the House held favourable contracts with several Adeptus and recruited specialists of all sorts. Arcturus is one of those specialists - a psyker under contract from the Adeptus Astra Telepathica. Arcturus, a Savant-Militant, is a battle-psyker with telekinetic powers who was recruited into the Florin house guard. A man of military bearing, he had already served for some time when the ship he was aboard suffered a mutiny at the hands of subversive elements and a core of crew were sealed in stasis in a hidden chamber, to be later released and take back the ship. Sadly it was not to be, and Arcturus has languished in stasis for decades, only awaiting a Florin's order to release him...

Arcturus was born on a ship, and by the Emperor he'll die on one! Of course every ship in the Imperium is its own city filled with clans of ratings and officers and a birth in the void is not unusual.

===Birthright: Scavenger===

Arcturus was born from an illegal liaison between an officer and a lowly rating on the warship [I]Goethe[/I]. His officer mother bore the child in secret and then cast him to the lower decks to be raised by the scavengers there. His father was put to death for fraternisation.

Arcturus' psychic talent manifested itself early and hard, and after a terrifying Warp voyage that saw his uncontrolled powers wreak havoc with his birthship's plumbing detachment, he was soon imprisoned and handed over to the dreaded Black Ship as soon as was possible.

===Trials and Travails: The Hand of War===

Arcturus, named by the administers on the Black Ship, underwent his sanctioning and was found to be mentally strong enough to be Sanctioned. This process happened with almost unseemly haste, because a war front had broken out with the terrible forces of Chaos and he had already been tithed to the war effort. He served faithfully as a battle-psyker for years, but now has seen too many comrades and fellow soldiers fall to the vile machinations and underhand tactics of the corrupt, and will not tolerate their affront. During one critical mission, the General which Arcturus was attached to made a critical error - against Arcturus' own advice - and the command squad was left stranded behind the enemy lines of a sudden counter-attack. One by one the General's elite guard went down defending their commander, until Arcturus was forced to commandeer the rocket launcher of the freshly-slain heavy weapons team to drive back a gibbering horde of mad-blind cultists with a wall of shrapnel. After Arcturus and the General were finally extracted by a determined push from a nearby Storm Trooper detachment, Arcturus petitioned to keep the weapon and has had it adorned with gold plate icons and additional modifications.

After being wracked and almost broken in the war against Chaos, Arcturus's contract came to an end and he was re-assigned as part of the compact with the Florin Dynasty. Already used to the military lifestyle, Arcturus found the demand for duty coupled with the extra freedoms which came with working away from the military engendered in him a new attitude - before he served well, but now he served with true devotion to the Florins. After being instrumental in driving off a Chaos warship out of the Hadex Anomaly that attempted to raid the [I]Rose of War[/I] Hugin Florin rewarded him with a spectacular suit of power armour, "the better to armour his body and soul against that dark filth", the Lord-Captain said.

It turns out that Arcturus' whole genetic line is cursed with the taint of the psyker - his mutation is not unusual in those who bear any of his familial genes. His ascension to the exalted ranks of the Savant-Warrant and proven sanctioning may stand to prove at last that his genetic line is not worthless, that they may still prove themselves useful to the Emperor. His mother Tatyiana von Goethe, now a ranking Naval officer nevertheless held back by her past, knew of him and his progress and secretly hoped that he may succeed and succeed well. Of course, that was over 200 years ago.

Arcturus' employment with the Florin Dynasty had been eventful. When Arcturus was active the then-Lord-Captain Hugin Florin, known as "The Warhawk" favoured him and took Arcturus on many missions to plunder drifting Space Hulks and defend against psychic phenomena. The two shared a common theme of forthright military mindedness and Arcturus was well rewarded with gifts, not least his choice of strange psy-active weaponry from the planet Naduesh after he managed to psychically interrogate the natives until they gave up the secret of a lost cache of archaeotech which profited the Florins greatly.
