Gaisa to '''[[Nerma Pianis]]'''. When she volunteered to became the gaiba, Rolo half expected Nerma to pick him as her gaisa. When their mother died, a few years after their father, he felt sorry for her and her sister. Here and there he shared with them a kind word, a smile, or a cup of [[gray]] rice. He did owe them that, didn't he? Both of his parents were alive. A year of servitude wouldn't be so bad. Plus the sisters were not bad looking. 
Today he considers this kindness the biggest mistake of his life. He realized early on that he was going to do most of the work. He didn't even mind at the beginning. But Nerma didn't try to spare him at all. It was like she never considered him capable of being tired, or hurt, or angry. And as the days passed he gotten very angry. The unfairness of his situation got to him and Nerma felt it. Then she became unbearable. The jobs she gave him changed from making her feel good to making him feel bad. She made him count the hairs on her brush, made him paint his body blue, even eat raw fish scales. Thankfully the sex stopped. Even someone as evil as [[Nerma Pianis]] felt guilty coupling with someone who hates her. Rape at least was beyond her. 
He can't go on like this. He has to get away. Three more months seem like an eternity. And who knows, the crazy mud ape could easily volunteer for another year. Maybe she would volunteer each year until her sister was old enough and took over the role of gaiba. He wouldn't be surprised if they kept him on out of spite. 
He has to run. He doesn't have a raft, and taking the one his father owns would be throwing his family into poverty. Nothing else to do but to keep his eyes open and wait for an opportunity.
