==Background==

Jon's family has a long history of service in Star Fleet. His mother worked on Earth researching in the science track, focused on improvements to engine and shield technology while his father was a security 'red shirt'.  As Jon grew up, he was fascinated by what he saw his parents do, and then the time came for him to enter the Academy and start his own path. As a cadet in the engineering program, he went on a shakedown journey for a small probe ship that got called to a colony suffering an outbreak of an unknown contagion. Unfortunately , the engineering and science officer quickly succumbed to the unknown plague.  Jon worked with the medical officer to set up a purge technology with components of the shield and transporters that helped push the toxins the plague gave off from the bodies of the ill. This helped strengthen the patients (which at some point included both Jon and the medical officer) to the point they could work through the infection.  This incident helped him land his special commendation and the opportunity for extra engineering training.
