While traveling in the United States, Steele was drawn into the orbit of Hannelore Rhyner and eventually was discovered to be the Paladin for creation of the Principal of Salvation.  After Hanna's transformation into the Dark Queen of the Fae, Steele became her first and only Companion while in Lyon, France.

After the death of Jonathan Cromwell in 1930 during the assault on the Tower in Trujillo, Spain - Hanna (with the guidance of Maturin De Bonnevault) changed Steele into one of the Fae.

Consequently Steele became manager of the Lyon property, and took Cromwell's previous companion Evangeline Hopewell into his household.

Steele left Lyon at Hanna's request in September 1932 to join the household of Antonio and Nicoletta Grimaldi to serve as Nicoletta's bodyguard.
