Santosh Kansara started his career as the scion of one of many merchant houses. By shrewd negotiations, undercutting, lucky recruitment and suspected-but-never-proven blackmail, he clawed his way into most markets on the island over the course of the latest decade, renaming the company "Kansara Imports" once it was clear that he did supply over half of the island's wares. He has a son in the business but is known to not play favorites, rather looking out for skilled employees.

Salman is quite happy to talk at length about the immoral business practices of Santosh Kansara, how he undercut his competitors to push into their markets, and putting good, loyal people on the street after finding more skilled replacements. Which Malthis deduces is what happened to him, though Salman has nothing good to say about Neethi.

Other people are of a different opinion, though. Sure, those things Salman said may be true, but Kansara keeps the local pirates paid off and the people love him for it. He has a token guard force, mostly to keep petty thieves out of his warehouse, but his real defense is a solid mass of dock workers who would take up arms if someone wanted to hurt him.
