===Background===

Daughter to a Father who is the Chief Physician in a large hospital and a Mother who is constantly bed-ridden, Yomiko spent most of her childhood in the hospital, befriending paitients of her own age. Needless to say, a lot of her friends died from various conditions, and those who didn't were eventually discharged and (hopefully) never came back. Over time, Yomiko developed a protective mechanism to simply forget all the people who had past. Once someone died or left the hospital, Yomiko simply erased them from her memory, pretended like the friendship never happened. It worked well enough for Yomi, keeping her sane despite repeatedly losing friends to death and diseases.

But this mechanism failed when Yomiko's Mother finally gave in to the disease and passed away. At first, she tried to erase her Mother from her memory like she always did, to no avail: unlike a friend, she couldn't simply erase her Mother's imprints by throwing away presents and deleting mail addresses. The proof of her Mother's existence were everywhere - the ring on her Father's hand, the pictures on the walls in her house, even the resemblance to her Mother on her own face, repeatedly reminds her of what she lost. This drives Yomiko to depression as she started to remember all the friends she had lost, all the friends she tried to forget. She became obsessed with psychics and necromancy, looking for a way to reconnect with her lost friends.

But Yomiko's salvation came in the form of a picture book called "Portion of Magic", a book that she liked as a child but never quite understood. In the book, a Princess was gravely ill, and a wizard came to her rescue. The wizard holds two portions: the Angel's Portion, which will save the Princess at the cost of everyone forgetting about her; the Demon's Portion, which will kill instantly the Princess but allow her memory to live on forever in people's hearts. The Princess chose the Demon's Portion and fell into eternal sleep under the watch of her loved ones. Reading the book again, Yomiko realized that there are many ways of living, and just because someone died doesn't mean their memories have to die with them.

One day when she was mourning her Mother in the cemetery, she was assaulted by Nihils, apparently because they think she had potential. However, ghastly figures rose from their graves to defend her, and she transformed into a magical girl with minor demonic features. She was able to defeat the Nihils, protecting herself and the graveyard. She became the Scion of Memory, with the ability to sense the imprints left in the world by people who had passed away and communicating with them. But even before that, she possesses eidetic memory and a very high intellect, her mature appearance and perhaps the glasses often led people to believe her to be much older then she actually is.
