This rule requires 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 sided dice as well as twenty-sided dice. Random damage uses die notation, with the number of dice to be rolled followed by the letter “d” and then the number of sides on the type of dice that should be rolled. (1d8 means “roll one 8-sided die”. 3d4 means “roll three 4-sided dice, or roll one 4-sided die three times, and add the results together.”) Give every character 5 times as many maximum hit points, then add extra random damage to each attack based on the amount of damage the attack normally does. The average damage using this optional rule is only about 2 or 3 times normal damage, so this rule also tends to make combat last more turns. However, characters can still be taken out quickly by high damage rolls. {| ! normal damage | + ! random damage | = ! total damage |- | align="center" | 1 | | align="center" | 1d4 | | align="center" | 1d4 + 1 |- | align="center" | 2 | | align="center" | 1d6 | | align="center" | 1d6 + 2 |- | align="center" | 3 | | align="center" | 1d8 | | align="center" | 1d8 + 3 |- | align="center" | 4 | | align="center" | 1d10 | | align="center" | 1d10 + 4 |- | align="center" | 5 | | align="center" | 1d12 | | align="center" | 1d12 + 5 |- | align="center" | 6 | | align="center" | 2d6 | | align="center" | 2d6 + 6 |- | align="center" | 7 | | align="center" | 3d4 | | align="center" | 3d4 + 7 |- | align="center" | 8 | | align="center" | 2d8 | | align="center" | 2d8 + 8 |- | align="center" | 9 | | align="center" | 3d6 | | align="center" | 3d6 + 9 |- | align="center" | 10 | | align="center" | 1d20 | | align="center" | 1d20 + 10 |- | align="center" | more than 10 | | align="center" | 1d20 | | align="center" | 1d20 + normal damage |}
