Hana's father, Bae, works as a plumber. Her mother, Cho Hee, died when she was 12. Hana has three
older brothers-- Chung-Ho (19), Dae-Jung (18), and Jae-Sun (17). Chung-Ho and Dae-Jung also work in the family
plumbing business. Jae-Sun, the intellectual hope of the family, will be going to University.

Hana's family has long held that a person should, no matter what, be strong, and stand up for themselves. In the Jeong
family, however, this is often taken to extremes, and any guests may be surprised at how easily shouting matches, or
even brawls, break out, and then end quickly, without rancor. Jae-Sun is the only member of the family who hasn't been
repeatedly disciplined at school and/or work for fighting and arguing. He is, of course, regarded as weak by his father
and older brothers.

Bae is big (6'2"), loud, and obsessed with Korean culture. He decorates their flat with anything of Korean culture that he can
find, makes the family eat a diet heavy in any Korean foods he can make or buy, and, of course, gave all his children
very Korean names. He's even taking a course in the Korean language. (Yes, none of the family actually speak Korean.
Bae's a fourth-generation immigrant. They speak native, lower-class English.)

While Bae sometimes wishes that his daughter was more traditionally feminine, deep down, he knows that he has enough
trouble coping with Jae-Sun, and trying to raise a domestic, quiet daughter-- even more, doing so without a mother!--
would be too much for him. Thus, he tends to treat her like one of his sons.

Chung-Ho is a studied younger version of his father. He'd push the other children around, but they all learned at a
young age to push back, and he's fond of all of them, although he wishes that Jae-Sun wasn't such a weakling.

Dae-Jung is trying very hard to be like Chung-Ho and Bae, but, at 5' 6", he's shorter than any of them-- even Hana!
This can make him more belligerent in compensation, but he's actually very loyal to the others, and more attentive
to his siblings than Chung-Ho-- he's been concerned about Hana's gang activities, and tried to encourage her friendship
with Judy, as he thinks she's a good influence on Hana. He also tries to look out for Jae-Sun-- he may not understand
his younger brother at all, but he'll gladly give an amateur nose-job to anyone he thinks is picking on his intellectual
sibling.

Jae-Sun, or, as he's called at school and by all his friends, Jason is the odd one out among the siblings-- he's quiet,
intellectual, very clever, and nonconfrontational. At school, he's cool and confident, and unashamed of being what he
is. He never brings his friends home, and tries to keep his family away from his school life as much as possible.
He's had a crush on Judy Nesmith for a few years now, but despite some efforts on his end, Judy hasn't responded. (Dae-
Jung has tried to encourage him, but thinks that Jae-Sun's efforts are too subtle, and Judy hasn't noticed. In actual
fact, Judy is quite aware of Jae-Sun's feelings, but does not reciprocate them, so she ignores his overtures, hoping that
he'll move on.)

Hana's history can be summed up with a single word: "Troubled." She attended a very rough girl's school, and quickly
got into a lot of fights, as she wouldn't tolerate being pushed around by anyone, no matter who. Hana's size, ethnicity,
and attitude made her seem like a challenge to many girls, but her ability to fight and the icy, cold gaze she gradually
acquired made many of these confrontations short. She began to gain followers-- other tough girls who wanted to follow
the toughest one of all. Hana wanted friends, but didn't know how to get them, except by being the tough, dangerous
girl they all expected, and so a gang formed around her with surprising speed.

It was at this school that she met Judy Nesmith.

Judy was a bright girl from a lower-class household, a child of a hard-working, clever mother and an unemployed, hard-
drinking father. Her home life was hard, and her school life was worse, as she quickly fell to the bottom of the
food chain among her classmates. At least, until Hana interfered.

Hana hadn't really intended to make a point of helping Judy specifically, but seeing her classmates and teachers pick
on the poor scared girl was annoying. Keeping after somebody who was so obviously so weak and so scared aroused
Hana's contempt, and one day, that contempt boiled over into anger. Hana was unafraid to take on three other girls
in a fight, and not at all scared to get in trouble for fighting. True, she hardly came out of the confrontation
unmarked, but what did that matter? The other girls were at least as badly off, and she'd made her point.

As it turned out, she'd also made a friend. At first, the friendship was very touchy-- Judy was too scared of Hana to
simply talk to her, but followed her around, trying to be safe in Hana's aura. Eventually, Hana confronted her, and
Judy blurted out that she wanted to be Hana's friend in a panic. Luckily for her, Hana had no problem with this, and
let her hang out. (In actual fact, Hana was very touched, and very happy that someone wanted to be her friend, and not
just her follower. But she couldn't show that or admit it, by her own social reasoning.)

It was a bit rough for Judy at first-- she didn't fit in that well with Hana's gang-- but she grew tougher and stronger,
and a great deal more self-confident over time. Visiting Hana's family was terrifying at first-- the shouting and
violence were frighteningly familiar-- but she came to understand that in Hana's family, all you had to do was stand
up to someone and shout back, and you'd be accepted.

They became fast friends, although it's a friendship that baffles many observers, even in Hana's gang. Judy wound up
staying with Hana's family a lot, and they came to accept this oddly timid white person. (These days, Judy's only
timid in comparison with Hana.)

Things went on, and Judy's mother finally divorced her father, citing abuse of herself and her daughter. Judy had
to stay with the Jeongs even more in those days, but in the end, it was a relief, and Judy could finally invite
Hana over. Then Judy's mother married her boss, and suddenly Judy was wealthy.

At the same time as this whirlwind courtship was happening, Hana and Judy's homeroom teacher, Mr. Herrity, had finally
moved on to the pair as his newest targets. Mr. Herrity had an eye for attractive young girls, and it was easy enough
to use his authority as a teacher to get them to cooperate with his desires. Besides, with poor girls like these,
who'd believe them if they talked? He also felt that he could count on the cooperation of his fellow teachers in
convering up his misdeeds.

Unfortunately for Mr. Herrity, he badly misjudged Hana, and when he tried forcing matters, he wasn't prepared for
how strong she was, or how well she'd fight. Likewise, he wasn't prepared for Judy to come forward and testify as
to why the fight had happened... or for other girls to do the same.

The school did its best to cover up the scandal, and Hana and Judy had to find a new school. Judy's new father would
been more than happy for Judy to leave her old life, and Hana, far behind, but Judy would have none of it, and went
to a great deal of trouble to help Hana attend the same new school as her.

It was shortly thereafter that the monster attacked Judy, and Hana transformed. Hana doesn't really understand
what's happened to her, but it's clear enough to her that this power is intended to fight monsters, and if there
are monsters, then she's going to fight them.
