Anti-Social: Withdrawn, with poor interpersonal skills. Survivor’s Guilt: Obsessive about saving patients. Joe joined the Army at 17 with grand notions of saving lives at war overseas. The Army proved a poor fit for his youthful idealism and two combat tours left him a damaged civilian at 21. He had difficulty readjusting, but stuck to what he knew, getting a job as an EMT. He hates cliches, so internalizes his problems and refuses to seek outside treatment, due in part to the Army's "tough it out" mantra. He doesn't have lofty dreams or goals anymore. He just wants to be normal again. His kid sister is a psych student. She mentioned the concept of psychological flooding. His understanding was that if he deliberately exposed himself to scary things, he would become desensitized to his nightmares and sleep through them. It was convenient, then, that Terrorland was in town. Being that he was going to be awake anyway, he thought to give it a try. "What's the worst that could happen?"
