Access Denied. Unauthorized Access.''''' They all meant the same thing to Jacob. A night of fun that would end with a bit more money in the bank. Not that he needed it. He was the son of a city council member, Christina Burke who doted on her child even though he was twenty-one now. She gave him everything he wanted. But he always wanted more and planned to get it tonight. At least, that was the plan. The hacker had become the hacked that night. As he'd been bouncing his signal from place to place to avoid detection, someone else had latched on and piggy-backed all around the world and had somehow traced their way back to his IP. '''''We know what you are... you're not alone.''''' "What the hell does that mean?" Jacob rubbed his hand absently where some damn dog had tried to take a chunk out of him a couple of days earlier. That had been the same day he'd told his mother he was dropping out of school. She was the politician. And even though he had a knack for the job, he didn't want to be part of a corrupt system. '''''University of Chicago computer lab. Midnight. Alone.''''' The screen went blank. Jacob rubbed his eyes and cursed. Someone had something they planned to blackmail him with. Maybe it was the cops...but why would the cops want to meet him inside the University. His curiosity was peaked. 12:35 am. Jacob tapped his watch to make sure it hadn't been screwed up when he had climbed through the lab window. There was no one here, and it didn't look like anyone was coming. Suddenly, one computer turned on...then another and another, until four computers in the small lab were illuminated. '''''Uratha. Urdaga. Amahan Iduth. Urfara.''''' Were these some kind of new code? No, Jacob could tell they were words. They were strange yet familiar somehow. His heart was pounding so hard that he almost didn't hear the sound of the footfalls nearing the lab. Thinking quickly, Jacob dropped down to pull the plug on the pc. If there were no lights coming from the lab, maybe the guard would just pass by. His eyes widened as he followed the monitor's cord. It wasn't plugged in.. it had never been plugged in. Looking at another he saw that it wasn't either. But the words were on the screen still. He was feeling a mixture of terror and uncontrolled rage at being unable to turn off the monitors. Smash them! Without thinking, he raised his fists and smashed them down onto two of the monitors. Debris sprayed onto his chest and face. Now the footfalls were heading towards the lab...sounded like running...1 guy...and...afraid. He could smell fear emanating from outside the door, but how? The rage was building, and he fought to control it. The other two monitors were off. But how? No time.. Jacob leaped out of the window and landed on... all fours? He could feel the wind rushing past him as he ran through the campus. Calls of "damn dog" and "what ever happened to leash laws" came from students returning to the campus from late night parties. A large paw abruptly pinned him to the ground as he darted into an alley just outside the campus. "Easy, kid," a gruff-yet-feminine voice growled. A tall asian-looking woman stepped out of the shadows, but she didn't look right. She shrank before his eyes into what he considered normal size for an Asian. He tried to talk, but only a few yips and yowls escaped from his mouth. "Let him up. His change was tame compared to most. You, my friend, are a rare and very lucky one." And so it was that Jacob learned of his true nature from a small pack of Iron Masters. They told him it was they who had sent the message and the asian woman was the one that had bit him in her Urhan form. They taught him all the basics he needed to survive and then initiated him into the Iron Masters before just disappearing one day. He never learned their names or anything about them, but he knew they'd been sent by Mother Luna to watch over him. It wasn't long afterwards that he found his new pack. Marten seemed a natural leader, and Jacob fell right along-side as the pack beta. Autumn looked to be a capable fighter. Tina...well...she just wanted a family it seemed to him. And James, he's someone Jacob is still trying to figure out, though he knows James is familiar at least a bit with spirits. More than he is anyway. Jacob still can't let go of his life before the change. He still hacks and is still talking to his mother and a couple friends he had gone to school with. They too had come to work at City Hall. Something Jacob intended to use to his advantage should the need arise. [[TheChicagoChronicles:Main_Page|Back to The Chicago Chronicles Main Page]]
