Growing up, they took to Andorian culture quite strongly, identifying with it far more, although some elements of Aurelian culture did stick. Unfortunately, none of these elements were the peaceful, calm ones, the young Vyssa turning into quite a bundle of trouble. They took their work on the farm seriously, and tended the needs of the redbat perfectly, but outside of that they had too much energy, too much pride and a habit of getting into fights. Seeking discipline and a focus for their drive, Vyssa applied to, and was accepted into, the Andorian Imperial Guard. While it had definitely scaled back since the pre-Federation days, the Guard were still a respected institution and Vyssa's impetuousness was tempered with discipline. They would still get into fights, but only for the purpose of ending them swiftly and with a minimum of injury on either side. Graduating in 2366, they served as a medical officer on several Andorian vessels until 2373 and the start of the Dominion War when they transferred into Starfleet, retaining their rank of Lieutenant. In 2370, Vyssa was severely injured when, contrary to orders, they risked their life to rescue several Chalnoth pirates after they had attempted to raid an Andorian scientific outpost on a small moon with an ammonia-based atmosphere. Despite receiving severe respiratory injuries and permanently losing the use of their eyes, Vyssa recovered the pirates, treated their wounds and convinced them to provide testimony revealing a previously unknown branch of the Orion Syndicate that had been behind that, along with several other, raids in the sector, allowing the Guard and Starfleet to deal with the true culprits. For most of the war Vyssa served on the USS Exeter, forming close friendships with many of the crew, especiailly her chief engineer, Edith Alfaro, with whom they had entered into a relationship with, two years before Exeter was crippled and left adrift in space, killing the captain, much of the crew and Alfaro when the vessel's containment fields failed, flooding the ship with radiation. Vyssa was able to evacuate themself, most of the wounded and many of the medical staff to the exterior of the vessel, an intact section of the Exeter's hull shielding them from the radiation enough that many of them survived long enough to eventually be rescued. Following the loss of the Exeter, Vyssa was given a promotion and sent immediately back into frontline service on the USS Venture, whose medical staff had been mostly lost when it had briefly been boarded by the Jem'Hadar Vyssa would very much like to see the more peaceful side of Starfleet that the Guard used to talk about.
