==Backstory==
Everyone in Emily Reed's life dies.

Her birth announcement was followed up a week later with the death of her paternal grandfather. Emily's mom even put the two newspaper clippings side by side in her baby book.

Her paternal grandmother died nine months later one day after Emily was born.

Her maternal grandfather died the day she went to kindergarten. They weren't very close. Her maternal grandmother died the day she went to junior high. This affected Emily more because the Reed's had been living with the old woman.

Emily's father died the day of her high school graduation. Emily's mother died the day she graduated from college. Emily's brother died the day she graduated pre-med.

Always the same story. Diabetes, liver disease, heart disease, emphysema, so easy to prevent or cure. Humans are so weak, but they don't have to be. They can be improved, made better. If only someone had the stomach to do it. Emily does, and she will never lose anyone else. ''Ever again''

Before all the craziness happened, before she even knew of Derrick and his ilk Emily fell in true love with this man. She was going to marry him, even step away from her cherished career. He died. A one in a million genetic defect killed him. Messily. The champion of genetic science watched as her true love withered and died. She found the engagement ring in his pants pocket when she was asked to clean out his hospital room.

She went crazy. Crazy with purpose, days shut up in her lab, months of research set aside, years of progress halted. All to save a dead man. Genentech fired her. Security even dragged her out of the building screaming “I can fix it! I can cure him! I can make us better!”
