Thomas was a miracle baby born to parents already in their 40s who had tried unsuccessfully for many years to have children. He knows all this because his mother tells this story to everyone she meets. After he was born she quit her job because she couldn't bare to trust anyone else with her precious Tommy. When it came time for school she decided to homeschool rather than "risk" him in public school. To be fair she was an excellent teacher and Tom (he hates being called Tommy) excelled academically. He even had plenty of extracuricullars but his mother attended every practice session and micromanaged him relentlessly. He has practically never hung out alone with anyone his own age that wasn't a relative. 

Where is his dad in all this? Dad is always working as a big shot lawyer. Their relationship is strained. Tom thinks his father must secret resent him for "turning" his mom into helicopter parent.
Tom has two big secrets. One, he is pretty sure he's bisexual. Two, he purposefully tanked every application that would have allowed him to live at home during college. ETU was his safety school but since it was almost a 3 hours drive from home his mother didn't seriously consider it an option. When the other offers fell through she pushed for him to wait a year and reapply but he begged and pleaded until she relented and allowed him to attend.
He is excited to attend ETU and incredibly nervous. He had a friend from a homeschooling group called Nathan who attended ETU last year but he withdrew suddenly and Tom hadn't heard from him since. Tom secretly think Nathan cracked under the pressure of being away from home and on his own for the first time. Nathan's texts towards the end of the semester were sounding really paranoid. Tom worries that he might crack too.
His parent's just left after staying in a local hotel for a few days to help him get "settled". His parents installed a tracker app on his phone but he's currently spoofing his location so she thinks he only ever leaves his dorm to go to the library


''Potential Plot hook: Tom really is a miracle baby. His parents made a deal with a demon/spirit/witch in order to conceive. This contributes to their strange behaviour towards him. Tom's mother is scared of losing him to whatever force they made the deal with and Tom's father is scared of him.
