There aren't many hispanic men in Oakland, Maryland, and even fewer of those are actually half-white. In fact, other than his younger brother Edwin, Tom Reagan may be the only one. Because of this extreme minority status, Reagan got used to prejudice on all sides as he grew up. It thickened his skin, but he managed to never lose his natural, if reserved, sense of humor. Tom grew up in a loving home, the son of a hard-working factory worker. He was interested in cars since he was young and was fixing his father's Chevy and his own, beat-up mustang since he was 16. He studied hard in high school and at a vo-tech school after that and got a job as a lead in a local mechanic's when he was 20. He worked hard for 15 years and eventually saved enough money to open a shop of his own. Over the course of the next 10 years, Tom built his business and his reputation. Business was never spectacular, owing largely, Tom felt, to prejudice against his hispanic heritage, but he didn't really have to struggle to make ends meet, either. In fact, he was on his way to Los Angeles for a special vacation to an auto-show in Los Angeles when al Qaeda terrorists hijacked his flight. Tom's brother, Edwin, was lead mechanic under him when he left and inherited not only the shop, but also the care of Tom's wife, Jenny, and young son, Juan. When he awoke four years later and returned home, Tom found that his shop had prospered in his absence and his family had missed him dearly. His brother turned over the reins and Tom was only too overjoyed to get back to work. Unfortunately, that's when his powers manifested themselves; he caused every car in a 9 mile radius around him to disintegrate. Tom stood trial for the harm he caused. If things had gone poorly, it could have resulted in at least Maryland, and possibly other states, denying that the Survivors have the same rights as other humans. Reagan's fellow Survivor, Milos Wiazowski, went to Maryland to make sure the trial went in Reagan's, and The Survivors', favor. Although things wre touch-and-go for a while, with Wiazowski leaving Maryland while Reagan was still on trial, charges against Reagan have since been dropped. While good, this means that the question of the Survivors' legal status has yet to be resolved with any finality. ---- The AMERICAN GODS
